I made a quick trip in the evening to Cascais hoping to avoid the national rail strikes that were affecting Portugal. It’s a quick 30 min from Cais de Sodre to Cascais and an additional 15 min walk to Boca de Inferno (translation: Hell’s Mouth). I am told the best time to visit is in the mornings during high tide when the chasm is filled with water and the light shines beautifully through the gap (mouth). I only had a couple days in Lisbon so I couldn’t explore more, but as a repeat visitor to both Lisbon and Cascais I would recommend allocating extra time for both places. I’m already looking forward to being back.
Mystic Garden
One of the things that I find makes photography special and resonant for me is the way that it treats “ordinary moments” as potentially extraordinary. The things that make a life beautiful are cobbled together from those moments.
On a day where the weather felt underwhelming and overcast i decided to travel up to the Toronto Botanical Gardens and see if anything would come of it. What I got in return was clear skies and a gorgeous golden hour, captured below.
Waterfalls
The GO Niagara train runs on weekends. The $25 round-trip ticket includes the GO Train to Niagara as well as two-day access to WEGO, the hop-on, hop-off bus service that travels throughout the city of Niagara Falls and Niagara Parks.
Ratray Marsh
I took my Fujifilm X100F out for a spin last weekend at the Ratray Marshes near Port Credit. It’s been over a year since I last used this camera and I was wondering if I should sell it. My experience with it on the weekend was positive, and I was reminded how simplicity can free your creativity. The size and relative ease-of-use of this camera allowed me to recall how much I enjoy shooting the 35mm perspective (well except when I saw deer in the distance and could barely make them out). Seeing the Fujifilm JPEGS on the back of the camera in vivid colour was equally inspiring. Hopefully this experience will get me to shoot more with this camera or at least bring it alongside my main camera.
The Bluffs
I went to a Meetup in Toronto for portrait photography out at the Scarborough Bluffs this past Monday. I didn’t know what to expect because the forecast was calling for likely rain. The shoot ended up involving harsh light, bright poppy colours, and lots of shadows. At the mercy of the weather and other beachgoers, I had to work off the cuff and think through the feeling of the shoot and make do with what I was given. I ended up really loving the rocky beach and lush colours.
